On October 9, the Internet was taken by a storm with a rich and splendid trailer of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s upcoming film, ‘Padmavati’. The 3-minute trailer opens with an entourage of loyal courtiers led by Rawal Ratan Singh (Shahid Kapoor) to the Chittorgarh fort where Rani Padmavati (Deepika Padukone) resides. We are shown the couple’s love for each other and just when everything seems to go smooth, Alauddin Khilji (Ranveer Singh) makes his arrival.
The trailer depicts a royal atmosphere with a hint of a fast approaching chaos. From it the rich Rajputana culture to the epic battle scenes, Bhansali has proved himself, again. And who can ignore his hair-raising background score that emotes very beautifully in accordance with the changing moods of the trailer?
Deepika Padukone, as always, looks like Rani Padmavati’s role was sculpted for her with a regal aura surrounding her, while her eyes show no fear at the sight of Khilji. Shahid looks crisp and stolid, looking at his queen with admiration. But the contradictory scene stealer is Ranveer Singh’s Khilji. Every dark hue of Khilji’s vile nature is shown with sharp clarity. Be it his evil laughter or his fury to conquer Padmavati, Khilji’s character is going to win people’s hearts for sure. Ratan Singh’s and Khilji’s portrayal of valour are very finely entwined with Padmavati’s conflict of being stuck between the two.
Ever since it was released, the trailer has had everyone crooning its praises and counting down the days until its release. It has garnered the highest number of views in 24 hours on YouTube for a Hindi trailer. Not only us, the actors themselves are excited about the film and took their excitement to social media. “Overwhelmed by the love pouring in. Humbled and thankful. Love you all #PadmavatiTrailer @FilmPadmavati,” tweeted Shahid while Ranveer posted, “Although this film, for me, is beyond numbers..this is a pretty amazing record! Congrats to the team! #PadmavatiTrailer @FilmPadmavati”
The film, which is sure to make an instant success, faced many hindrances while the shoot was in progress. Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s set was vandalized by Rajput Karni Sena when he was filming at a fort in Jaipur. Bhansali was assaulted on the sets by members of Karni Sena who staged an angry protest at Jaigarh Fort in Jaipur where Bhansali was shooting for the film. In a video that had gone viral, protesters were shown wreaking havoc, damaging cameras and other shooting equipment while raising slogans and shouting abuses in Hindi. Post attacks, a debate has ensued involving people supporting Bhansali and those questioning the Director’s liberty to tweak historical facts in the name of creative liberty.
Bollywood celebrities, including filmmakers Karan Johar, Farhan Akhtar, Ram Gopal Verma and Anurag Kashyap along with actors Hrithik Roshan and Sonam Kapoor had expressed their anger after Rajput Karni Sena workers created a ruckus and vandalized the sets of filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Padmavati in Jaipur. In a series of social media posts, they stressed the entire film fraternity should come together and take a stand. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) chairman had stated, “If the government doesn’t wake up now and take strict measures against such happenings, the Indian cinema industry will begin to wither. People should have the patience to wait and judge a film by watching the whole film rather than creating a ruckus by merely watching the teaser.”
The film is said to be made on a budget of 1.6 billion INR and the current scoop on the film is that the beautiful antique jewellery adorned by Deepika in the movie was crafted by Tanishq Jewelry.
Having read all about the film, let’s all wait patiently for it to be released and quench our thirst with the film itself.
