IIFA 2018- a star studded event!

Cinema is the heart of the Indian culture, with Bollywood being its heartbeat. With the progression of the film world from silent and black-and-white movies to high definition coloured and technologically advanced films, cinema has come a long way in its journey of more than 100 years.  Yes! With it completing more than a century, Bombay Talkies is what has ruled over the culture of Indian cinema. With the birth of Bollywood, several awards functions also originated. Among the most famous ones is the International Indian Film Academy Awards, popularly known as the IIFA awards.

IIFA had its nascency in the year 2000 with the current, 19th edition of the awards, having been concluded on 24th June, 2018. This year, the awards function was held in Bangkok, Thailand. It was a three-day affair, which saw a package of talent, glamour, humor, sentiments and, elegance, come alive. One of the biggest awards gala of Bollywood, NEXA IIFA awards, was held from 22nd June, 2018 to 24th June, 2018.

The nineteenth year of the IIFA awards was a unique and special event in itself. With many crème de la crème being absent from the function, many new faces graced the event. This occasion did not only see some stellar performances and the deserving nominations take away the trophies, but also did it endorse environmental causes and cinema memorabilia. The theme of this year’s awards function was Preservation of Cinema. The design of the stage had an amalgamation of Thai elements of the Siam Niramit theatre which were given an Indian touch.

Day One of the three-day event witnessed the IIFA Rocks which is a musical event. It was the first leg of the three-day event which saw a few melodious performances and some killer dance moves as well. The night was hosted by Pyaar Ka Punchnama fame Kartik Aaryan and the all-rounder talent, Ayushmann Khurrana. While the majority of the awards to be given out were reserved for the main event, the technical accolades were given out on the first day itself.  Though not graced by all the A-listers, this event did see some beautiful and handsome faces, all donned in their best looks. IIFA Rocks included a gig by composer-singer Pritam, who, along with other Indian musicians like Shalmali Kholgade, Amit Mishra, and Antara Mitra created soulful and classy music. The act had an amazing blend of the Indian tunes with some Thai elements. Apart from music, there were stage shows by actresses like Mouni Roy and Nushrat Bharucha, that took the glamour quotient a notch higher.

Day Two of the three-day event was a low-key affair with the Bollywood stars having a meet-and-greet session with their fans. Varun Dhawan, one of the celebrities for the meet-and-greet session even danced on a few of his songs, leaving his fans delighted and in awe. Some celebrities were even noticed to have been speaking about the need for nurturing and preserving the rich cinematic culture of the Indian cinema.

Day Three of the three-day event was the primal day which saw a lot of ecstasy, prestige, emotions and of course, highly groomed celebrities. The day for which several stars had been rehearsing for the longest of time, was a grand spectacle. What began with the audience walking in on the green carpet, ended with each one departing with fond memories and tired but happy faces.

The green carpet was seen flooding with fancy and unique attires which consisted of a sight of primped individuals. With starlets donning various hues of attractive colours, shades of grey seemed to have been the colour of the night. Apart from grey, and black, there was a wide variety of colour preferences among the youngsters. While most of the men sported a suave 3-piece suit, some did step out of their comfort zones and tried a different look altogether. With the ladies, gowns were what dominated. While Rekha attended the event wearing a nude embellished saree by Manish Malhotra, Karan Johar shone in his Dolce & Gabbana suit. The junior artist Zaira Wasim stumped the media with her floor-length gown and Anil Kapoor charmed away with his never-aging look. While Shraddha Kapoor looked gorgeous in her pink satin gown, Kriti Sanon went metallic on the carpet. With Ranbir Kapoor and Kartik Aaryan suited up in dapper ensembles, Radhika Apte and Urvashi Rautela wrapped themselves in exclusive pieces.

In all, the makeup of the stars was on point with nude looks being a highlight.

The decked-up celebrities.

With the commencement of the awards night, Riteish Deshmukh and Karan Johar welcomed the guests and proved to be excellent hosts to the evening. Amongst their side-splitting tactics and admirable hosting, there were several impacting and wonderful performances. However, Rekha’s performance was the show-stopper of the event that stole all the thunder. While she gave a beautiful and graceful performance, she took the stage by storm when she performed on it after more than a decade. Other performers to burn the dance floor included Bobby Deol, Kartik Aaryan, Ranbir Kapoor, Varun Dhawan, Shraddha Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor.

The show also witnessed some emotional moments; like when Boney Kapoor received the ‘Best Actress’ award on behalf of the Late Sridevi. The list of the trophies given out is mentioned below:
