Rape and molestation have become common words nowadays with women safety at stake. Biggest shame to the glory of India in recent years is the growing crime rate, and rape cases against foreigners, due to which the number of foreign travelers visiting, has decreased to a great extent with fewer women travelers coming to India.
One such incident is that of the rape and murder of a 28-year-old Irish woman, Danielle McLaughlin in Goa. She was celebrating Holi at Goa’s popular Palolem beach on 13 March 2017.
A 23-year-old has been charged with rape, destruction of evidence and causing hurt for the crime. The crime is being committed by a single person and is thus, not a gang rape, as quoted by Goa police. Postmortem reports have proved rape and police are probing further investigation into the matter. The woman’s mother performed last rites of her daughter on 16 March 2017 saying she will be missed a lot, but they’re going to take every step to get justice for her.
The woman resisted his attempts to rape her which is indicated by marks on thighs and other parts of the body. He forced himself upon her and in a bid to evade himself from law, he killed her. Moreover, in order to prevent the body from being identified, he completely distorted her face by continuous stabs on the face with broken beer bottles, pieces of which have been found near the body which was discovered a few kilometers away from the crime spot. The criminal himself has accepted his crime before police.
As McLaughlin had come to India using a British passport, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Irish Embassy are working closely to probe investigations regarding her death.
We all have our condolences with the lady’s family and have faith in our government that they would do justice to the Irish woman so that no other incident like this happens with any other foreign woman. But is this enough? Isn’t it high time, women were not treated as objects used for pleasure? The change begins with a change in mindset. It’s high time, people in our country realize that.
