Priya Prakash Varrier: another addition to the internet’s long list of overnight sensations

Priya Prakash Varrier, the girl who won the nation with her beautiful smile and expressive eyes, has gained a celebrity status after her 20 second appearance in the video of the Malayalam song Manikya Malaraya Poovi from the movie Oru Adaar Love went viral, all thanks to the mighty social media. But it’s nothing we haven’t seen before. If there’s something social media is really good at, it’s creating overnight obsessions. Welcome to the club, Priya.

After managing to wink her way into our hearts and timelines, Priya makes getting the nation hooked look so easy. A first year B.com student from Vimala College, Thrissur, this young actress is about to make her debut with the movie Oru Adaar Love. She also happens to be a talented singer. Only 18, this young lady’s fan base already looks strong even before the official release of her debut movie, proven by a whooping 1.8 million instagram followers and 17k Twitter followers.

Thank you for all the love and support💙

What exactly makes a video go viral? Internet-scholars haven’t been able to pinpoint one specific reason for videos going viral yet, but in this case we can clearly say it was the brilliant acting and expressions of Ms. Varrier, who said so much without actually saying anything. Her admirers could not get enough of her wink and her smile, they bravely announced how many times they watched the video on repeat, just for the magic created by the young actress. But the moment an old picture of her resurfaced where she appeared with her acne scars or duskier skin (which can be due to the low resolution of camera or issues with lighting), she was suddenly not so beautiful anymore, her smile wasn’t that alluring anymore. How can a girl have actual imperfect skin problems, that’s just unacceptable! Effortless conclusions were drawn that she looks ugly without makeup. All the things that poets and philosophers claim, about beauty lying in the eyes of the beholder, are just meaningless gibberish anyway.

Social media made her a star; it was not her smile or her natural charm, was it? Then they should be the ones to drag her down if needed. That’s only fair, no? Priya Prakash Varrier is not the first example of the internet losing its chill and she certainly won’t be the last. Remember Arshad Khan, the gorgeous blue-eyed Pakistani chaiwala who went viral on social media? He now has signed a modelling contract. What about ‘the hot mugshot guy’ Jeremy Meeks who stole hearts with his piercing blue eyes and chiseled jawline? He has entered the modelling world as well.

So here’s to the all-powerful internet, creating overnight sensations, one fresh face at a time.
