Supreme Court upholds the Delhi High Court’s verdict, Nirbhaya Rapists to hang

The Supreme Court has declared the punishment for the 4 convicts of the Nirbhaya rape case which took place in Delhi in 2012. The 23-year-old student was gang-raped and tortured on her way back home by the 4 convicts.

The Supreme Court defined the crime as a “story of a different world”. The court referred to the dying declaration of the victim and said that the brutal and demonic crime had been proved.
“The Nirbhaya rape-cum-murder case is rarest of rare case and we are compelled to give extreme punishment to ensure justice,” said the apex court, as it delivered the order.

“If ever a case called for hanging, this was it,” said the three judges of the court, confirming the death penalty handed.

As soon as the verdict was announced, the packed court started to applaud. The top court also said that the convicts do not deserve leniency for the kind of blasphemous crime they have committed.

Nirbhaya’s father said something similar to that in the morning.  “Leave the Supreme Court, even God will not forgive such people. They will be awarded death sentence,” he said. While her mother, Asha Devi commented, “Only the death penalty (will do) for culprits now, it should not be denied”.

However, AP Singh, the convicts’ lawyer had an opposing view. “You can’t hang someone just to send a message to society. Human rights have been slaughtered today,” he said. “Justice is not done, we will file a review petition after reading the order,” Singh added.

There were a total of 6 criminals involved in this crime. Of the 6, Ram Singh was found hanging in the Tihar Jail cell in March of 2013. Another convict, a juvenile, walked out of the correction home in December 2015. Punishment for the rest was announced earlier today.

The apex court also commended the Delhi Police for their work and bringing the criminals to book.
