If you are a resident of the Southern region of India or have spent the majority of your life living in the plains, chances are that you must be fascinated with snowfall! We grew up watching people enjoy snowball fights on the television and have even heard mesmerizing stories told by our friends about holidays spent in snow-clad regions. We have all made elaborate vacation plans at some point or the other, only to have fate betray us. Our dreams about making snowmen and gliding through ice remains a dream. Alas, because snow falls occasionally at a particular time of the year at different places. 
All you need to know is a perfect time and have the perfect plan in order to enjoy your trip in a total ‘paisa vasool’ way.

Sonamarg, Kashmir

Kashmir is known to be the heaven on Earth and rightly so. Be it the summer season or winter, Kashmir remains eternally beautiful. Sonmarg in Kashmir is an all-time favorite tourist destination. This place is extremely beautiful with frozen lakes and sunset points. In peek winters, it is covered in sheets of snow, rolled all over the mountains. Thajiwas glacier is an attraction for tourists in the summer. Snow can occasionally be found in the month of April. You can also enjoy trekking and river rafting.

Gulmarg, Kashmir

This hill resort is one of the best skiing destinations in India. It welcomes snow almost throughout the winter season. It’s one of the best places for skiing and snowboarding. It also serves as a base camp for the Mountaineers on their way to climb the Nanga Parbat and other peaks of the Pir Panjal range. The view of Mount Kanchenjunga can also be enjoyed from Gulmarg.


The perfect time to enjoy snowfall in Nainital is from October to February. The beautiful scenes and the number of lakes here add to its immense beauty. It is also known as the “Lake district” of India. Nainital has many simple tourist spots like ‘view’ points. The best place to enjoy snowfall in Nainital is at ‘The Snow point’, which is accessible through a Ropeway.

A hill station you can’t miss to visit, Shimla is quite popular among the youngsters and newly wedded couples. It boats with its snow-clad beauty and intermittent snowfall. The ideal time to visit this place is from December to January. Shimla sees bustle almost throughout the year and is deservingly crowded. It served as the summer capital of British India and therefore several architectural remnants of the colonial era can be found here. It is one of the most commercialized hill stations in North India.

North Sikkim

North Sikkim has Yumthang, the Valley of Flowers that experiences snowfall almost all throughout the year. Some areas of the valley are even kept shut due to heavy snowfall. Tsomgo lake and the Nathula pass enjoy heavy snowfall throughout the year. Most other areas, in the months of October and December, provide scenic spots to its visitors.
